Walewale Watermelon Factory Commissioned: Farmers Celebrate as Vice President Bawumia Delivers on Promise
The Walewale Watermelon Factory was officially commissioned by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, bringing immense relief and joy to peasant farmers in the region. For years, farmers in Walewale and surrounding areas have struggled with post-harvest losses due to the lack of a proper market for their bountiful watermelon harvests. With the opening of the new factory, these challenges are set to become a thing of the past, providing a ready market for their produce.
The factory, built by Champion Foods and Beverages with funding from the Ghana Eximbank, is expected to process up to 10 metric tonnes of watermelon per hour, producing a variety of juice beverages. Additionally, it will create over 400 direct jobs and benefit more than 3,000 local farmers.
During the commissioning ceremony, Vice President Bawumia expressed his pride in the successful completion of the factory, emphasizing it as a symbol of the NPP's commitment to industrialization. He reflected on the doubts that surrounded the project, particularly from opposition members who had questioned its feasibility. “When we promised to implement the 1D1F policy, they doubted us, but today we have completed over 150 factories, and Walewale is one of them,” Bawumia said.
The factory's commissioning has been hailed by local farmers, many of whom had previously given up on watermelon farming due to financial losses. "This is a historic day," said Abudu Seidu, one of the farmers. "This factory will bring back the interest in farming, and we thank Dr. Bawumia for making it happen."
Another farmer, Shani Nuru, expressed gratitude, saying, "Many doubted the promise, but today we see the results. We're very happy and thank the Vice President for his dedication to our cause." Issahaku Alidu, another farmer, believes that the factory will not only revitalize watermelon farming but also inspire young people to take an interest in agriculture.
The Walewale Watermelon Factory is poised to transform the local agricultural landscape, offering both economic opportunities for farmers and a solution to the long-standing market accessess issues.
