Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal produced a brilliant innings of 161 on Day 3 of the first Test at Perth, leading India to a commanding position against Australia. By tea on Sunday, India were 359-5, with a substantial 405-run lead, setting the stage for a potential victory as they look to gain the upper hand in the five-match series.
Jaiswal's knock was the highlight of the day. The 22-year-old, who had a humble beginning growing up in the slums of Mumbai, played an outstanding knock, facing 297 balls and hitting 15 fours and 3 sixes. His innings showcased maturity beyond his years, and despite the challenging Australian conditions, he remained solid throughout. After surpassing 100 with an extraordinary six off Josh Hazlewood, Jaiswal looked poised for a double century but fell short, edging Mitchell Marsh to Steve Smith at point. His departure was met with a standing ovation from the Perth crowd.
The 161-run partnership between Jaiswal and KL Rahul (77) set a new record for India in Australia, breaking the previous best of 1986 by Sunil Gavaskar and Kris Srikkanth. Rahul’s dismissal, however, marked the beginning of a mini-collapse for India, with Australia claiming four quick wickets in the middle session. After Rahul’s departure, Devdutt Padikkal (25), Rishabh Pant (1), and Dhruv Jurel (1) also fell. Jaiswal’s own dismissal triggered this collapse, but Virat Kohli (40 not out) and Washington Sundar (14 not out) steadied the ship, ensuring India retained their advantage.
The match had started with India in a dominant position, having bowled Australia out for just 104 in reply to their 150 in the first innings. Jaiswal's excellent form at the top of the order helped India extend their lead, easing any concerns about his performance in Australian conditions after a duck in the first innings.
Australia's bowlers, though weary, managed to gain some reward for their persistence. After Rahul's dismissal, they took quick wickets, with Hazlewood and Starc playing crucial roles. Despite their efforts, India remained in control, and the focus now shifts to how they will manage the remaining sessions to capitalize on their strong position. With the return of Rohit Sharma for the second Test, India’s selectors will face a tough decision regarding team selection.
