The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) College of Science and Technology (CCST) has reappointed Professor Mark Appiah as its President for another five-year term. The decision reflects his exceptional leadership and accomplishments during his initial tenure.

In addition to this reappointment, the University of Cape Coast has promoted Prof. Appiah to the rank of full Professor, recognizing his contributions to academia and research.

Under Prof. Appiah’s leadership, CCST has achieved significant milestones. The college expanded its academic offerings from eight to 19 programs and successfully hosted four graduation ceremonies. These achievements have bolstered CCST’s reputation as a hub for scientific and technological education in Ghana.

Beyond his role at CCST, Prof. Appiah serves as a Corporate Director at CSIR and has held influential positions, including Deputy Director of the CSIR-Forestry Research Institute of Ghana (CSIR-FORIG) from 2017 to 2019. He also served as Vice Chair of the Institute’s Governing Board, where he contributed to advancing forestry research and education.

Prof. Appiah’s achievements include the creation of a Master’s program in Bioeconomy and Natural Resources Management, affiliated with the University of Eastern Finland. This program, which ran from 2012 to 2018, highlighted his commitment to fostering innovation and sustainability in resource management.

His impact extends beyond Ghana through national and international collaborations. He has spearheaded and contributed to various projects funded by organizations such as the Academy of Finland, the International Tropical Timber Organisation (ITTO), the World Bank, and Finland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. These efforts have advanced forestry education, biodiversity conservation, and agroforestry management.

A prolific scholar, Prof. Appiah has authored or co-authored over 60 academic publications in his areas of expertise. His role as a reviewer for high-impact journals further underscores his academic contributions.

In addition to his work in Ghana, Prof. Appiah holds an adjunct professorship in Tropical Forestry at the University of Eastern Finland and is a member of esteemed organizations, including the Society for Ecological Restoration and the African Forest Forum.

His academic journey began at the University College of Education, Mampong, where he earned a Diploma in Agricultural Education. He later completed a Master’s in Land Use in Developing Countries at the University of Copenhagen and a Ph.D. in Tropical Silviculture at the University of Helsinki.

With a career that bridges education, research, and sustainable development, Prof. Appiah remains a driving force in forestry and scientific innovation, both in Ghana and internationally.
