Lille and Canadian forward Jonathan David is set to leave Lille at the end of the season as a free agent. David joined Lille for a reported fee of €30m as a replacement for Victor Osimhen, who joined Napoli for a record fee of €70m. The Canadian announced that he would be leaving the French side in a video; however, he had already informed the club hierarchy that he wouldn't be renewing his contract, so it was already widely known that he was leaving. The only thing needed was his announcement.
David has made 231 appearances, contributing 109 goals and 30 assists. He played a major role in Lille’s title-winning season, winning the Ligue 1 and Coupe de France in the season he joined. In the Canadian national team, David has about 60 caps with about 30 goals for the team, winning the Canadian Player of the Year in 2019 and 2024.
His performances have drawn him to many top European clubs. Not only is he a baller, he is relatively cheaper compared to other strikers like Isak, Osimhen, and even Gyökeres. The only thing that would be paid is his signing bonus of £15m.
While Jonathan has not made his decision yet, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Napoli has submitted an offer to the player, with several other clubs keen on signing him. Recall that Victor Osimhen, the Nigerian player who won them their first Scudetto since Diego Maradona after scoring 26 Serie A goals in the campaign—making him the first African Capocannoniere (top scorer)—was also signed from Lille, though not as a free agent.
And we all know that Lille doesn't miss—at least in the striker market—with Pépé, Osimhen, and now Jonathan David.
If Napoli gets David, they would be hoping he makes the same impact as Osimhen, who is set to leave permanently after his loan move to Galatasaray.
In the coming weeks, David is expected to make his decision.
