The Left-Handed Assassin 🗡️
Assassins, espionage, and political intrigue—it’s like a biblical spy thriller! This is the story of Ehud, the unlikely hero who saved Israel with his wits and a hidden weapon.
The Israelites had fallen into their usual pattern of disobedience, so God allowed them to be oppressed by King Eglon of Moab. For 18 long years, the Israelites served this foreign king until they finally cried out for help. God answered by raising up Ehud, a judge and a warrior with a secret advantage: he was left-handed.
Why does that matter? In those days, left-handedness was rare and unexpected—perfect for catching an enemy off guard.
Ehud crafted a double-edged dagger about a foot long and strapped it to his right thigh, where no one would expect a weapon. Then, under the guise of delivering tribute to King Eglon, he gained access to the palace.
After presenting the tribute, Ehud leaned in and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” Intrigued, Eglon sent everyone else out of the room.
Here’s where things get wild. Eglon is described as “a very fat man,” which will come into play in a second. Once they were alone, Ehud pulled the dagger from his thigh and plunged it into Eglon’s belly. The Bible notes (rather vividly) that the fat closed over the blade, and Ehud left the weapon behind.
After locking the doors to the room, Ehud escaped. Meanwhile, Eglon’s servants thought he was just using the bathroom (the locked doors fooled them), giving Ehud plenty of time to make a clean getaway.
Ehud rallied the Israelites, and together they defeated the Moabites, bringing peace to the land for 80 years.
Ehud’s story is a reminder that God can use anyone, even those who seem unconventional or overlooked, to accomplish great things. His left-handedness, seen as a weakness by some, turned out to be his greatest strength.
Your unique qualities—no matter how odd they may seem—are often your biggest asset. God doesn’t just work through the obvious heroes; He uses the unexpected ones too.
Imagine this as a blockbuster movie: Ehud, the crafty left-handed assassin, with dramatic slow-motion scenes and an epic soundtrack. And the tagline? “He came bearing tribute… and left with freedom.” 🎬
So, if you ever feel like you don’t fit the mold, remember Ehud—the ultimate underdog who turned his difference into a defining strength.
