Leicester City Sack Manager Steve Cooper After Winless Run
Leicester City have parted ways with manager Steve Cooper following a dismal run of results that has left the team languishing just two points above the relegation zone in the Premier League. The decision was made after the club suffered a 2-1 home loss to Chelsea, managed by their former coach Enzo Maresca. This defeat marked another setback for Leicester, who have been struggling in the league since the start of the season. The club announced the sacking on Sunday, confirming that Cooper had been dismissed from his role as first-team manager with immediate effect.
Cooper's departure comes after a string of poor performances. Leicester had a tough start to the season, drawing their opening match 1-1 against Tottenham Hotspur but failing to win any of their first six league games. While they briefly showed signs of recovery with victories over Bournemouth and Southampton, the team quickly reverted to their inconsistent form. Three defeats in their last four matches, culminating in the narrow loss to Chelsea, sealed Cooper's fate. The match had offered some hope when Jordan Ayew's stoppage-time penalty gave Leicester a chance to equalize, but the team ultimately fell short.
Leicester's decision to sack Cooper follows the club’s growing frustration with their performance under his leadership. The 44-year-old manager had been appointed in June to replace Maresca, who had led Leicester back to the Premier League after they won the Championship. However, Cooper’s tenure has been marred by a series of disappointing results, leaving the team in 16th place with just 10 points after 12 matches.
In a statement, Leicester confirmed that Cooper’s assistant manager Alan Tate and first-team coach Steve Rands would also leave the club. The club thanked them for their contributions and wished them well for the future. In the interim, first-team coach Ben Dawson, alongside coaches Danny Alcock and Andy Hughes, will oversee training until a new manager is appointed.
Cooper, who was previously sacked by Nottingham Forest last season, becomes the second Premier League manager to lose his job this season after Erik ten Hag’s departure from Manchester United last month. Leicester now face an important run of fixtures, with their next match away to Brentford on Saturday, as they look to turn their season around and avoid relegation.
