The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has firmly dismissed claims circulating on social media suggesting that presidential elections for the upcoming December 2024 general elections will be held on separate days. The misinformation was allegedly spread by Kumasi-based radio and television presenter Oheneba Nana Asiedu, who was subsequently arrested and later granted bail by the Ghana Police Service on November 23, 2024.

The EC issued an official statement on November 24, clarifying that the elections will take place on a single day, December 7, 2024, as stipulated by law. The commission emphasized the importance of maintaining public trust in the electoral process and urged voters to disregard the misleading information.

Oheneba Nana Asiedu’s arrest followed accusations of publishing false news likely to disrupt public peace. According to the police, the broadcaster encouraged voters to prepare for casting their ballots for presidential candidates over multiple days, a claim that spread rapidly on social media. The police described the statements as both untrue and potentially destabilizing.

In its statement, the EC reiterated, “The Electoral Commission urges the public to disregard the misleading statements. The general public is informed that the 2024 election will take place on December 7, 2024.”

The commission further reminded voters that polling stations will open promptly at 7 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. on election day. It also called on all eligible voters to participate in the democratic process peacefully and in large numbers.

The EC’s intervention underscores the critical role of credible information during election periods. Misinformation, especially concerning voting processes, can undermine trust in the system and discourage participation. The commission has called on media practitioners and citizens to verify election-related information before sharing it.

The incident has sparked conversations about the responsibility of media professionals to ensure accuracy in their reporting. Analysts have also highlighted the broader implications of such false claims, noting how they could disrupt electoral processes or fuel unnecessary tensions.

The upcoming elections are expected to be highly competitive, with significant attention on voter turnout and public confidence in the electoral system. As part of its efforts to uphold transparency and trust, the EC has promised to remain vigilant and address any further attempts to spread misinformation.

Citizens are encouraged to rely on verified sources such as the EC’s official communications and established media platforms for updates on election processes. The EC’s proactive stance demonstrates its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of Ghana’s democratic process.
