Spice Explains Why She Didn't Mention Shatta Wale in Her Interview
Spice, the internationally acclaimed Jamaican dancehall artiste and Grammy nominee, has shed light on why she didn’t mention Shatta Wale’s name during her recent visit to Ghana. The omission, which has sparked debates among fans and in Ghanaian media, was clarified in her latest interview as a conscious decision, though not ill-intentioned.
According to Spice, her decision was not to undermine Shatta Wale, often referred to as the "African Dancehall King." She explained that while in Ghana, her focus was on her collaboration with Stonebwoy, who had invited her to the country and hosted her. "It was Stonebwoy who flew me to Ghana, and I was mainly working with him during this visit," she stated.
Addressing the lyrical reference in her song *Jiggle & Whine,* Spice revealed that the line, “gimme a man from Ashaima and a man from Nima,” was inspired by Stonebwoy. “Stonebwoy told me to use those locations because of what they represent. Ashaima represents him, and Nima represents Shatta Wale,” she clarified. Spice further emphasized that her mention of Nima was, in essence, an acknowledgment of Shatta Wale’s significance.
Despite her explanation, some fans and critics believe Spice should have explicitly mentioned Shatta Wale, given his towering influence in Ghana’s music scene. Others, however, appreciate the subtle homage paid to him through the lyrics.
In response to the mixed reactions, Spice was quick to remind critics that her visit was primarily a collaborative effort with Stonebwoy. “It wasn’t about choosing sides. My connection with Shatta Wale is real, and I have immense respect for him as a dancehall pioneer in Africa,” she affirmed.
