Ruben Amorim began life as Manchester United boss in frustrating style as the Red Devils drew 1-1 at Ipswich Town.
United returned from the international break with a Premier League trip to Portman Road but they struggled to match their hosts intensity on Amorim's much anticipated debut.
Marcus Rashford's goal inside the opening 90 seconds sent the travelling United fans wild but that was cancelled out by Omari Hutchinson's deflected equaliser before the break.
As United laboured in the second period, Amorim was indebted to goal keeper Andre Onana, who produced a string of late saves to keep the away side level.
Amorim is confident of getting his methods across to a struggling squad but it could be a difficult few months ahead at Old Trafford.
As part of the changes, Amorim is expected to slowly introduce a formation similar to the 3-4-3 he used to great effect at Sporting CP with United starting with a 3-4-2-1 set up at Ipswich.
That included Amad Diallo repurposed at right wing-back - with the Ivory Coast international laying on an assist for Rashford's goal - with Alejandro Garnacho as a No.10 alongside captain Bruno Fernandes.
The Argentinian did not have his usual impact in a narrower role, with his pace and driving runs arguably better suited in a wide position, as former Premier League midfielder Robbie Savage highlighted at full-time.
"I don't think Ruben Amorim's system suits Alejandro Garnacho. He was used as one of the No.10s. I think he's better as one of the wing backs," as per quotes from BBC Sport.
Amorim will take time to get his plans in place in Manchester, but utilising Garnacho to best effect is crucial, with three Premier League goals already scored by the 20-year-old this season - more than any other United player.
