Presidential hopeful Alan Kyerematen has outlined an ambitious plan to reform Ghana’s Free Senior High School (SHS) program, focusing on sustainability and practical pathways for graduates. Speaking at the Presidential Encounters 2024, hosted by the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation on November 22, 2024, Kyerematen emphasized the need to evaluate the program’s long-term impact and address the critical question: “After Free SHS, what next?”
Kyerematen acknowledged the Free SHS policy as a transformative initiative but argued that its current form leaves graduates uncertain about their future. To tackle this, he proposed a comprehensive review under his Great Transformational Plan (GTP), which emphasizes financial sustainability, infrastructure improvements, curriculum reforms, educator training, and graduate transitions.
Kyerematen highlighted the importance of securing sustainable funding to ensure the program’s continuity. "We must critically evaluate the sources of funding. Where will the money come from to sustain this vital program?" he queried. He also pointed out significant infrastructure deficits, including overcrowded classrooms and inadequate dormitories, which compromise the quality of education.
A key focus of Kyerematen’s reforms is aligning the curriculum with modern economic demands. He questioned whether current teaching prepares students for the job market or higher education. "What are we teaching under Free SHS? Are we equipping our students with skills relevant to the 21st-century job market?" he asked.
To bridge the gap between SHS and the workforce, Kyerematen proposed a compulsory one-year apprenticeship and internship program for graduates. This initiative aims to provide practical training and certifications in artisanal and entrepreneurial skills. Graduates interested in starting businesses would receive mentorship, funding, and resources through government programs, fostering youth entrepreneurship and reducing unemployment.
For those pursuing higher education, Kyerematen pledged financial support to remove barriers, ensuring equal access for all students. Additionally, he introduced a “Health Screening Booths Scheme,” where graduates could operate health kiosks on a work-and-pay basis, earning stable incomes while improving healthcare access in underserved areas.
Recognizing the foundational role of early education, Kyerematen criticized the neglect of basic and pre-basic education, stressing its importance for preparing students for SHS and beyond. He also called for enhanced training for teachers and administrative staff to improve education delivery
Digital Revolution in Education
Kyerematen unveiled a groundbreaking policy to provide 100,000 free satellite internet hotspots nationwide, targeting secondary schools and strategic community locations. This initiative, part of his GTP, aims to revolutionize teaching, foster digital literacy, and empower content creators burdened by high data costs.
Kyerematen’s vision seeks to transform the Free SHS program into a springboard for national development, equipping graduates with tools to thrive in a competitive world. His reforms offer a practical and forward-thinking roadmap to ensure every graduate finds their path to success.
