Former ECG MD Asserts That Containers Cannot Go Missing

A former Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has dismissed claims that containers belonging to the company have gone missing. According to him, the nature of shipping and logistics operations makes it impossible for a container to simply disappear. His statement comes amid ongoing discussions and investigations into the alleged disappearance of over 1,000 ECG containers at the Tema Port.

Speaking on the matter, the former ECG boss explained that the shipping process involves strict tracking and documentation, making it highly unlikely for such a large number of containers to be unaccounted for. He emphasized that every shipment is recorded from the moment it leaves its point of origin to when it arrives at its final destination. These records are kept by multiple authorities, including port officials, customs, and the company receiving the goods.

He further noted that for a container to be considered missing, there would have to be a significant failure in multiple layers of oversight, which is improbable given the standard procedures in place. He questioned how such a situation could occur, considering that port authorities and shipping companies maintain detailed logs of all incoming and outgoing shipments.

The former MD also highlighted that ECG, as a state-owned enterprise, deals with regulated imports, which means all transactions go through official channels. This, he argued, further reduces the possibility of containers being lost without a trace. If there are discrepancies, they are likely due to mismanagement, poor record-keeping, or deliberate actions rather than an actual disappearance.

He called for a thorough investigation into the claims, stressing that if there is any issue regarding the location of these containers, it should be addressed through proper auditing and accountability measures rather than assumptions that they have vanished. He suggested that authorities trace the documentation of the shipments in question and verify their whereabouts rather than fueling speculation.

The issue of the missing containers has sparked significant public concern, with many questioning the efficiency and transparency of ECG’s procurement and logistics processes. Allegations of corruption and mismanagement have surfaced, with calls for those responsible to be held accountable. The controversy has also led to discussions about broader systemic issues within ECG and the need for reforms to ensure greater transparency in its operations.

While the former MD strongly believes that containers cannot simply disappear, he acknowledged that mismanagement could lead to confusion regarding inventory. He urged ECG’s management and government authorities to work together to clarify the situation and provide concrete evidence on the status of the alleged missing shipments.

In conclusion, he reassured the public that Ghana’s port and shipping systems are structured in a way that prevents outright disappearance of cargo. He encouraged ECG to focus on strengthening its internal controls to prevent future disputes over its assets.
