Basketmouth: Comedy Continues Despite Movie Production Plans
Nigerian comedian Bright Okpocha, popularly known as Basketmouth, has clarified that his foray into movie production does not mark a departure from comedy, his first love. The renowned entertainer made this known during the exclusive premiere of his debut feature film, A Ghetto Love Story.
Speaking to journalists, Basketmouth emphasized that while movie production offers significant financial rewards, it will not replace his passion for stand-up comedy. He revealed plans to embark on an extensive comedy tour starting in 2025.
“I am still into comedy,” he affirmed. “From next year, I’m going on tour. I already have my UK tour and a US tour planned. I’m also doing a show in Nigeria next year. Comedy is still going, and I’m not going to stop.”
However, Basketmouth disclosed a shift in focus when it comes to private events. He announced that he would no longer serve as a master of ceremonies (MC) for weddings and similar gatherings. While acknowledging the lucrative nature of such gigs, he explained his decision as a necessary step to preserve the integrity of his craft.
“The only thing I’ll stop is private gigs like weddings,” he said. “Although a lot of money comes from there, that is a sacrifice I had to make. You know, because I do stand-up comedy. That’s what I do. I didn’t enter this industry to be an MC at weddings and events. I felt like I was adulterating the art.”
Basketmouth expressed his discomfort with continuing as an MC, noting that it felt like a betrayal of his true calling. “If I’m doing a private gig, I have to be doing stand-up comedy, not MCing. Let me just do my 30 minutes and leave. But I can’t do MCing at any event anymore because I feel like I’m cheating on my art.”
The comedian’s transition into filmmaking has been met with curiosity and excitement. A Ghetto Love Story, his first feature film, marks a significant milestone in his creative journey. Despite this, Basketmouth reassured fans that his commitment to comedy remains unwavering.
