Gyakie: "I Cried Every 3 Days Early in My Career Over Hit Song Pressure

Ghanaian musician Jackline Acheampong, widely known as Gyakie, has shared the emotional challenges she faced early in her music career. Speaking in an interview with BBC Africa, the Forever hitmaker revealed how the success of her breakout single brought immense pressure to consistently deliver hits, often leaving her in tears.

“At the beginning of my career, almost every three days, I would be crying at home because the pressure was getting too much, especially when Forever blew up,” Gyakie said. She explained that fans’ heightened expectations to replicate the success of her hit song created overwhelming stress. “If I am pressured or shouted at, I am going to grab a tissue and cry. So, I don’t like to be pressured or shouted at,” she added.

The Rent Free singer acknowledged that while expectations can serve as motivation, they can also become a burden when they feel excessive. “The expectations to make hit songs are good when it feels like motivation, but different when it now feels like you are giving me pressure to do something,” she noted.

Gyakie also opened up about dealing with negative criticism and social media comments, which initially had a significant emotional impact on her. “It took me a while to not really let it get to me when people say bad things about me on the internet,” she said. Over time, she learned to cope with the negativity, explaining her current mindset: “Now, I could see anything about me—where the person knows what they’re saying is not true—and I’d just be like, somebody should give me some water to drink because the country is already hard.”

Despite these challenges, Gyakie has grown more resilient and now approaches her career with greater confidence. She attributes this change to learning about the music industry and developing the ability to filter out unwarranted criticism.

Her journey from emotional struggles to resilience has made Gyakie one of Ghana’s most celebrated female artists. Following the global success of Forever, which has surpassed 150 million combined streams, Gyakie has consistently released hits, earning admiration for her talent and determination.

Her story stands as an inspiration to rising artists, showing that with perseverance and self-belief, it is possible to navigate the pressures of the music industry while achieving remarkable success.
