Making one of the strongest statements on who should lead Ghana in the near future, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said the country needed a steadfast and determined leader to sail it through the current challenges. Speaking at a public event attended by teeming supporters of the party and the media, Akufo-Addo argued that growth and development of Ghana required a resolute and unwavering leadership-quality which the former President John Dramani Mahama lacked.
Two-term leader Akufo-Addo faulted Mahama's style of leadership as lacking the strong decision-making approach needed for certain key national challenges. "Ghana cannot afford weak leadership, especially in these times of economic difficulty and global uncertainty. We need a leader who is able to make tough decisions and take responsibility for them," Akufo-Addo said.
These comments by the President come as Mahama, the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress, prepares to contest the 2024 elections. Akufo-Addo sought to present the difference in his approach to governance against his predecessor's attitude. He cited the recent economic recovery programs, fiscal discipline, and social interventions being implemented under his watch as examples of the kind of strong leadership Ghana needs to go forward.
"Under my leadership, we have taken bold steps to stabilize the economy and create opportunities for all Ghanaians. Our leadership has been firm in tackling corruption, promoting infrastructural development, and ensuring the welfare of the people. This is the type of leadership Ghana deserves, not the indecisiveness that characterized the Mahama years," Akufo-Addo said.
This is not the first time the president has attacked the leadership of Mr Mahama; the two have constantly engaged in wordplay over the performance of Ghana's economy, among other governance policies. Mahama has also argued consistently that the policies pursued by the Akufo-Addo government have failed to deliver tangible results in the lives of ordinary Ghanaians, especially on job creation and reduction in the cost of living.
As the country heads toward the 2024 elections, the debate about who is best fit to take Ghana into the future is a defining issue that has persisted in the political firmament. It is likely that Akufo-Addo and Mahama will continue to clash over these different visions for the country's future.
