Key Battlegrounds: Ten Constituencies to Watch in Ghana’s 2024 Elections

As Ghana gears up for the 2024 parliamentary elections, several constituencies are emerging as battlegrounds that could shape the future political landscape. These constituencies, characterized by tight races and shifting loyalties, hold the key to determining the balance of power in Parliament. Here are ten constituencies to watch closely:

1. Ayawaso West Wuogon

A perennial hotspot, Ayawaso West Wuogon is expected to feature a fierce contest between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The youth vote, driven by university students and professionals, will play a crucial role.

2. Assin North

Following its high-profile by-election in 2023, Assin North remains a constituency under the national microscope. The race will test the NDC's hold and the NPP's efforts to reclaim lost ground.

3. Krowor

In Greater Accra, Krowor is a constituency where local issues dominate. A slight voter swing could decide this seat, as both parties strive to appeal to urban and suburban voters.

4. Sagnarigu

The Northern Region's Sagnarigu constituency is another toss-up. The NDC will fight to retain it amidst growing NPP inroads in the north.

5. Adentan

Adentan is a classic swing constituency. Rapid urbanization has led to a dynamic voter base, making it unpredictable and a must-win for both major parties.

6. Techiman South

The Bono East Region’s Techiman South will once again be a test of the NPP's rural strategy and the NDC’s appeal to grassroots voters.

7. Tamale Central

In the Northern Region, Tamale Central is pivotal. Ethnic and developmental issues are expected to shape voter preferences.

8. Cape Coast South

This Central Region constituency has often switched between the NPP and NDC. Developmental policies and education-related promises will dominate discussions here.

9. Dome Kwabenya

Known for its high-profile representatives, Dome Kwabenya in Greater Accra is critical for the NPP. Intra-party tensions could influence the outcome.

10. Effutu

Effutu in the Central Region has shown signs of becoming a swing constituency. The performance of its current MP will be under scrutiny.

These ten constituencies symbolize the dynamic nature of Ghana’s democracy. Their outcomes will not only determine parliamentary seats but also signal the public’s stance on leadership and governance.
