The current ruling by the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) on the National Cathedral issue has become a topic of widespread discussion and debate among Ghanaians".
CHRAJ in it's recent verdict on the National Cathedral saga, has cleared Reverend Victor Kusi Boateng of allegations regarding the possession of dual passports under different names. Additionally, CHRAJ recommended a forensic audit of the National Cathedral project and a possible prosecution of its trustees, following an investigation into alleged corruption and abuse of power.
On January 2023, North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa petitioned CHRAJ to investigate Rev. Kusi Boateng, Secretary to the National Cathedral Board of Trustees, over claims of conflict of interest.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo prior to the 2016 general elections made a personal vow to build a National Cathedral in honor of God when he wins power. The good news for him was, he did win power and assumed office.
As promised God, President Nana Addo began his path of fulfilling his pledge; he started building the National Cathedral, However, instead of using his personal funds to fulfill his promise to God, he started relying on taxpayer money to fulfill this pledge.
This move by the president, has sparked controversy, with many Ghanaians drawing parallels between the president's actions and those of some Gen Z women, who make generous pledges to their churches, only to return home and ask their husbands or partners to foot the payment.
Similarly, President Akufo-Addo's decision to use public funds for the National Cathedral project raises questions about accountability and the responsible use of taxpayer money. Though the president emphasized that the cathedral would serve as a symbol of national unity and a place of worship, many Ghanaians hold the view, that it should never be prioritized over more pressing national needs like the challenges with the free senor High Schools policy and high cost of living in the country.
It must be noted again that, making a pledge to one's God is a commendable act. However, fulfilling that promise is of paramount importance. Individuals are personally responsible for honoring their commitments to their faith. It is essential to recognize that spiritual pledges should not be made with the expectation of relying on external funding sources, particularly those that involve utilizing public resources or other people's finances.
