Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has weighed in on Mohamed Salah’s contract situation, suggesting the issue lies not with wages but with the length of the deal Salah is demanding. The Egyptian forward’s current contract expires in June 2025, and speculation about his future has intensified following recent comments hinting at his potential departure.

Owen believes Salah, 32, is seeking a multi-year deal that would provide him with long-term security as he approaches the later stages of his career. Speaking to Optus Sport, Owen explained:“When you’re young, you want short contracts to keep desirability high. When you’re older, you want stability and security. My inkling, and from what I hear, is that Salah wants a longer-term contract.”The former striker noted that Liverpool might hesitate to offer an extended deal given Salah’s age, despite his exceptional form and fitness:“He’s still in great shape and banging in goals, but the club will be mindful that age catches up with everyone eventually.”
