Ghana Police Service, Armed Forces Commit to Restoring Peace in Bawku

The Ghana Police Service (GPS) and the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have reaffirmed their commitment to restoring lasting peace and stability in Bawku, a town grappling with recurring conflicts. The security agencies are rolling out coordinated efforts aimed at addressing the causes of unrest and safeguarding lives and property in the area.

Bawku has been a hotspot of ethnic tensions, with disputes occasionally escalating into violence. To address the situation, the government has deployed additional police and military personnel to strengthen security and prevent further escalation. These forces have been tasked with conducting intensified patrols, setting up checkpoints, and maintaining an active presence in conflict-prone areas to deter violence.

The leadership of the GPS and GAF has emphasized the importance of collaboration with stakeholders, including traditional leaders, youth groups, religious authorities, and civil society organizations, in fostering peace. Through dialogue sessions and peace-building initiatives, the security agencies hope to address the underlying issues fueling the conflicts.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) John Adjei, addressing a recent press briefing, highlighted the importance of community cooperation in the peace restoration process. “We are committed to ensuring that Bawku becomes a beacon of peace once again. However, we cannot do this alone. We urge residents to provide credible information and refrain from activities that could spark further tensions,” he stated.

Similarly, Colonel Kwame Mensah of the Ghana Armed Forces stressed that the military’s role is not just about enforcing security but also supporting reconciliation efforts. “Our presence here is to protect lives and ensure that dialogue and understanding can thrive. Peace is a collective effort,” he noted.

The security forces have also begun engaging with local youth, whose active involvement is seen as crucial to achieving sustainable peace. Awareness campaigns on the benefits of unity and the dangers of conflict have been launched in schools, marketplaces, and other public spaces.

The government has expressed optimism about the combined efforts of the security services and local stakeholders, believing these initiatives will pave the way for calm in the region. Residents are hopeful that the continuous presence of security personnel and proactive measures will bring an end to the cycle of violence.

As part of their efforts, the GPS and GAF have assured the public that they will remain impartial and professional in executing their duties. The people of Bawku have been encouraged to seize this opportunity to foster reconciliation and work together for a peaceful future.
