Bawku Conflict: Martin Amidu Challenges Akufo-Addo and Bawumia to Account for Leadership Amid Security Crises
Prominent anti-corruption campaigner and former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, has raised concerns about the leadership of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in addressing the persistent conflict in Bawku. In a strongly worded statement, Amidu criticized the government for failing to ensure peace and stability in the volatile area, describing the leadership response as inadequate and disappointing.
The Bawku conflict, which has its roots in a protracted chieftaincy dispute, has led to repeated clashes, loss of lives, and the displacement of many residents. Despite heavy security deployments, the area remains a hotbed of violence, with many accusing the government of neglecting the underlying causes of the conflict.
According to Amidu, the deteriorating situation is a reflection of a leadership vacuum at the highest levels of governance. “The President and his Vice have a constitutional duty to safeguard the lives and property of every Ghanaian. Their silence and failure to provide clear, actionable solutions to the Bawku conflict amount to dereliction of duty,” Amidu said.
He emphasized that the government must prioritize dialogue and reconciliation among the feuding factions rather than relying solely on military intervention. “Force alone cannot resolve deep-seated historical disputes. There must be genuine engagement and respect for traditional authority to achieve lasting peace,” he added.
Amidu also called on civil society, traditional leaders, and religious bodies to put pressure on the government to take decisive action. He argued that the ongoing conflict undermines Ghana's image as a beacon of peace and stability in West Africa.
“The international community is watching, and our inability to resolve this conflict casts a shadow over the country’s reputation. Leadership is about accountability, and I challenge the President and Vice President to demonstrate they are in control,” Amidu stated.
The former Special Prosecutor’s comments have reignited public discourse on the Bawku crisis, with many echoing his sentiments. Critics of the government argue that the failure to address the root causes of the conflict could have far-reaching implications for national security.
As tensions persist, stakeholders in Bawku and beyond are calling for an urgent, inclusive approach to restore peace to the troubled area. The nation awaits a decisive response from the government to address the issues raised by Martin Amidu and others concerned about the ongoing crisis.
