6PM to 6AM Curfew Will Not Solve Bawku’s Problem – Dr. Adam Bonaa
Renowned security analyst Dr. Adam Bonaa has expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of the 6PM to 6AM curfew imposed on Bawku, stating that it does not address the root causes of the conflict. Speaking on TV3's Big Issue program, Dr. Bonaa argued that curfews are short-term measures that merely manage symptoms of insecurity rather than tackling underlying issues.
According to him, the ongoing instability in Bawku requires a multifaceted approach that prioritizes dialogue, community engagement, and developmental interventions. “A curfew may restrict movement, but it does not resolve the deep-seated tensions fueling this conflict. If anything, it creates economic hardships and erodes trust between residents and security agencies,” he noted.
Dr. Bonaa further explained that while curfews are useful in preventing immediate violence, they often fail to address the structural issues at play. “What we are witnessing in Bawku is not a problem that started yesterday; it has roots in chieftaincy disputes, land disagreements, and a lack of development. Until these are resolved, curfews will remain a band-aid solution,” he said.
He emphasized the need for government and traditional authorities to collaborate in fostering peace through dialogue. “There must be an inclusive platform where all stakeholders, including elders, youth groups, and representatives from rival factions, can voice their grievances and work toward a sustainable resolution,” he suggested.
Dr. Bonaa also urged the government to prioritize development in the area, as economic opportunities could help mitigate conflict. He criticized the heavy reliance on military intervention, stating that such measures should complement, not replace, efforts to promote dialogue and understanding.
“Peace is not achieved with guns and curfews alone. We need investments in education, healthcare, and infrastructure to give the youth alternatives to violence. Without this, Bawku’s issues will persist,” he concluded.
The 6PM to 6AM curfew, which has been in place for several months, has sparked mixed reactions from residents. While some view it as a necessary step to curb violence, others share Dr. Bonaa’s concerns, calling for more comprehensive measures to address the conflict.
As the government grapples with the delicate task of restoring calm in Bawku, experts like Dr. Bonaa continue to advocate for long-term solutions that prioritize dialogue and development over reactive measures.
