Bernard Mornah Calls for Peace in Bawku
Renowned peace advocate and former National Chairman of the People's National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah, has made an impassioned appeal for calm and reconciliation in Bawku, as the area continues to grapple with security and communal tensions. His call comes at a time when the volatile situation has raised concerns over the safety and development of the region.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Bernard Mornah urged residents of Bawku and its surrounding communities to set aside their differences and work together toward sustainable peace. According to him, the longstanding conflicts in the area have not only hampered socio-economic progress but also tarnished the image of the region as a beacon of cultural diversity and heritage.
"Peace is not just the absence of conflict but the presence of justice, mutual respect, and dialogue," Mornah emphasized. "The people of Bawku have more that unites them than divides them. It is time for us to prioritize what binds us together and seek amicable solutions to our differences."
The veteran politician acknowledged the efforts of security agencies and traditional authorities in maintaining order but stressed that the root causes of the unrest must be addressed through genuine dialogue. He called on opinion leaders, youth groups, religious leaders, and civil society organizations to play proactive roles in fostering peace.
"The security agencies have done their best to manage the situation, but peace is ultimately a collective responsibility. It requires all stakeholders to come to the table with open hearts and minds," Mornah noted.
He also appealed to the government to invest in long-term strategies for peacebuilding, including education, economic empowerment, and cultural exchange programs that promote coexistence. According to him, development initiatives should prioritize the region to give its people a sense of belonging and opportunity.
Bernard Mornah expressed optimism that Bawku could rise above its challenges and reclaim its place as a vibrant and peaceful community. He urged residents to reflect on the adverse impact of the conflict on future generations and take bold steps toward reconciliation.
"Let us not allow our children to inherit enmity and divisions. The path to peace may be difficult, but it is the only way forward," he concluded.
Mornah’s heartfelt appeal has sparked renewed hope among some residents, who believe that with commitment from all parties, lasting peace in Bawku is achievable.
