Former Youth and Sports Minister, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has called for a complete restructuring of Ghana’s sports sector following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This marks a historic low, as it is the first time in two decades that Ghana will miss the prestigious tournament. The Black Stars finished last in Group F, amassing only three points without a single victory across six matches. This disappointing outcome has sparked nationwide criticism and calls for reforms in football and the broader sports landscape in Ghana.
In an interview with Channel One TV, Ankrah expressed deep dissatisfaction with the state of sports, particularly football, in Ghana. He pointed out that the issues extend beyond performance to include mismanagement and dwindling support from fans. Recalling a pivotal moment during the qualifiers, he noted the unsettling experience of fans jeering as Mohammed Kudus prepared to take a penalty. "I’ve never seen anything like that," Ankrah said, describing the incident as a reflection of the loss of unity and morale within the sports community. He stressed the need for a national reassessment, calling it a critical time to rethink and reset the strategies governing Ghanaian sports. According to him, only a comprehensive overhaul can restore the nation’s once-proud footballing heritage.
In the wake of the Black Stars’ failure, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has already disbanded the team’s Management Committee. Meanwhile, discussions about coach Otto Addo’s future are ongoing, with many questioning his role in the team’s poor performance. Beyond football, the crisis highlights broader challenges in sports administration, including a lack of accountability and long-term planning. Ankrah’s comments resonate with growing calls for systemic reforms that prioritize sustainable development, effective management, and support for athletes at all levels. As the nation grapples with this setback, the demand for a unified and strategic approach to rebuilding Ghanaian sports has never been more urgent.
