With the December 7 election looming, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has rejected a request from the Majority in Parliament to reconvene the House. In a memo dated November 26, Speaker Bagbin explained that Parliament will resume its sessions after the elections to address pressing matters, ensuring a smooth transition to the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.

Speaker Bagbin emphasized the importance of parliamentary decorum, stating that members should exhibit conduct of honor, empathy, and humility in the performance of their duties. He also noted that the election period is crucial in Ghana's democratic process, allowing political parties and candidates to present their manifestos and account for their stewardship.

The Speaker's decision aligns with calls from the NDC group, who urged him to reject the recall request made by NPP MPs. Parliament is traditionally adjourned during election periods to allow representatives to engage with constituents. Speaker Bagbin has assured that the House will reconvene post-elections to complete outstanding matters critical to the nation's governance.

Speaker Alban Bagbin's emphasis on decorum in parliamentary proceedings is a timely reminder of the importance of maintaining dignity and respect in the House. By urging Members of Parliament to act in the national interest, he's highlighting the need for lawmakers to prioritize the country's well-being over personal or partisan interests.

As he aptly put it, "The national interest would better be served if members exhibit conduct of honour, empathy, and humility in the performance of their duties". This call to action underscores the significance of parliamentary etiquette and the need for MPs to conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the gravity and respectability of their office.

In declining the request to recall Parliament, Speaker Bagbin demonstrated his commitment to upholding the principles of parliamentary decorum and ensuring that the House conducts its business in a dignified and respectful manner.
