Dr. Stephen Amoah, the Deputy Minister of Finance and Member of Parliament (MP) for Nhyiaeso, has come under scrutiny following an incident on Tuesday in which he allegedly displayed a firearm during a confrontation with some local youths. According to eyewitness reports shared with Ghanaian news outlet 3news, the altercation began when a group of young people confronted Amoah over an unfulfilled promise he had made to them.
The incident reportedly took place after Amoah had attended a launch organized by the Unity and Love Family, where he had pledged to donate GHS 5,000 to the group. However, when he failed to deliver on this promise, the youths reportedly confronted him. As tensions rose during the verbal exchange, one of the youths allegedly pulled out what appeared to be a toy gun and pointed it at the MP. In response, Amoah is said to have retreated to his vehicle, from which he retrieved a pistol, sparking chaos among the group.
Further accounts from witnesses suggest that the disagreement may have been fueled by a separate issue. Some of the youths reportedly took offense when the MP advised them against drug use, which they interpreted as a provocation. During this exchange, the situation escalated when one of the individuals produced what seemed to be a gun-like object, prompting Amoah to respond by brandishing his own weapon.
Amoah has since confirmed the incident, defending his actions by claiming that he acted in self-defense, stating, "My life was in danger, I had to defend myself. Even Jesus Christ would react if you pull a gun at him," according to 3news
The confrontation has drawn attention to the increasing use of toy guns in the region, a practice that has raised concerns among authorities. Ghana's law enforcement has taken steps to address this issue, as the possession and use of toy guns in threatening situations are considered criminal offenses. In recent months, police have arrested at least 26 individuals in connection with the illegal use of toy guns.
