Rapper Edem to Fan: 'Can’t Afford Rent in Accra? Move to Your Village'"
Ghanaian rapper Edem has ignited a heated debate online following a viral video in which he criticized fans for frequently seeking financial help from him. The clip, widely circulated on social media, shows Edem addressing requests for rent money and payments for unsolicited artwork during a livestream session.
In the video, Edem responded sternly to a fan who asked for assistance with rent, speaking in pidgin English. He advised those struggling with high rental costs in Accra to consider relocating to their hometowns, where living expenses are lower. “I beg you. If you no get money to rent for Accra, go back to your village. Free house dey there you fit dey inside. Don’t come put your rent for somebody ein pocket,” he said.
The rapper also expressed his displeasure with fans who created portraits of him and later demanded payment. Addressing one such individual, he remarked, “‘I drew you, but you didn’t give me money.’ Why, ebe me I send you to say draw me? You know the number of people dey draw me every day to show me love? I send you to say come draw me? If you draw me because you appreciate me wey you be my fan ah, ebe me I send you to say draw me? You know the number of drawings dey my room wey I no dey even use am for nothing?”
He criticized the practice as a calculated attempt to manipulate him into giving money, referring to it as an effort to “use high-brain.”
The video has triggered mixed reactions on social media. While some users support Edem's stance, arguing that fans should not impose financial burdens on celebrities, others found his tone harsh and called for greater empathy toward fans’ struggles. Critics suggested that as a public figure, Edem should show more understanding, considering the societal pressures and hardships many face.
This incident highlights a broader conversation about the expectations placed on celebrities in Ghana and the dynamics of fan-celebrity relationships. While fans often look to celebrities for inspiration and support, celebrities, in turn, face the challenge of balancing their generosity with setting boundaries.
Edem’s outburst underscores the frustration some public figures feel when personal boundaries are crossed. However, it also raises questions about how celebrities can engage with fans in a way that remains respectful yet firm in addressing such issues.
