The Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is set to sign a peace pact today, Thursday, November 30, 2024, as Ghana proceeds to the presidential elections, where he is one of the presidential aspirants. The Peace pact that is to be signed later Thursday is intended to ensure violence-free elections and national coexistence during the campaign for office. This was confirmed through the Bawumia Campaign Team in a statement published Wednesday morning.
The signing of the peace pact is expected to take place with key political and civil society leaders gracing the occasion, among others from the Ghana Electoral Commission, and international observers. Dr. Bawumia, who is seeking re-election as Vice President to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party, is expected to make a strong commitment to the principles of peace, integrity, and fairness throughout the election cycle.
According to a member of the Bawumia Campaign Team, who wished to remain anonymous, the signing of the peace pact is evidence of the commitment by the Vice President that the elections should not be violent and disrupted. "Dr. Bawumia has always been an advocate for peace, and this peace agreement is a clear demonstration of his commitment to the preservation of democratic processes in our country," said the campaign official.
This is critical as it is done on the road to the December elections. There is the tendency for tensions to mount as the country heads towards elections.
