Nigeria Customs Service Intercepts Over 20 Vehicles Stolen From Canada
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted over 20 luxury vehicles reportedly stolen from Canada and smuggled into the country. The operation, which was carried out by the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone A, took place following intelligence reports and strategic border monitoring.
The vehicles, comprising high-end brands such as Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, Lexus, and Range Rover, were recovered during a special operation targeting international car smuggling syndicates. Customs officials confirmed that the cars were shipped into Nigeria through unscrupulous channels, with false documentation and fraudulent declarations.
Addressing journalists in Lagos, the Customs Area Controller of FOU Zone A, Hussein Ejibunu, revealed that the operation was part of the agency's efforts to tackle smuggling and cross-border crimes. He emphasized the NCS's commitment to protecting Nigeria’s economy and ensuring compliance with trade regulations.
“We received credible intelligence about a syndicate involved in the smuggling of stolen vehicles from Canada into Nigeria. After weeks of surveillance and collaboration with international partners, we successfully intercepted these vehicles. The documents presented for their clearance were discovered to be fake,” Ejibunu stated.
He added that the recovered vehicles are valued at over ₦1 billion, noting that the smuggling of stolen cars poses a threat to the integrity of Nigeria’s borders and its reputation in international trade.
The Customs boss disclosed that investigations are ongoing to apprehend the culprits behind the smuggling operation. He assured that those found culpable would face the full weight of the law. Ejibunu further called on Nigerians to desist from patronizing unauthorized dealers and to verify the sources of vehicles they intend to purchase.
The development has sparked commendations for the NCS’s vigilance and operational efficiency. Many Nigerians have urged the government to strengthen border security and collaborate with international agencies to curb the influx of stolen goods into the country.
The interception of these vehicles highlights the growing challenge of transnational crime and the need for improved international collaboration. The NCS has assured the public that it remains committed to safeguarding the nation’s borders and combating smuggling in all forms.
This latest interception by the Nigeria Customs Service underscores its dedication to maintaining order and accountability within Nigeria's importation and trade sector. With investigations underway, the public awaits further updates on the outcome of this significant operation.
