Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has strongly defended his endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) 2024 presidential candidate, despite criticism from some political actors and commentators. Speaking at a campaign event at the Ofori Panin Palace in Abuakwa South on November 27, Kufuor reaffirmed his unwavering support for Bawumia, highlighting his track record and leadership qualities as essential for Ghana’s progress.
Kufuor addressed the backlash over his endorsement, acknowledging calls for him to remain neutral due to his role as a statesman. Critics, including Movement for Change leader Alan Kyerematen, have argued that such endorsements could diminish the perceived impartiality of a former president. However, Kufuor dismissed these concerns, emphasizing that his extensive experience and association with the NPP give him a unique perspective on leadership choices.
“I understand that my position as a statesman invites scrutiny when I voice opinions. But wisdom often comes with experience, and my political roots lie in the NPP, the party through which I attained the presidency,” he stated.
Kufuor detailed his reasons for endorsing Bawumia, describing him as a competent and visionary leader. He praised Bawumia's economic expertise, particularly during his tenure as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, which coincided with Kufuor’s presidency.
“During my administration, Dr. Bawumia played a pivotal role as part of the Bank of Ghana team that steered the country through a challenging economic period. His contributions were instrumental in revitalizing Ghana's economy at the time,” Kufuor noted.
According to Kufuor, Bawumia's leadership represents a continuation of the NPP's commitment to economic stability and technological advancement. He urged Ghanaians to rally behind Bawumia, describing him as the ideal candidate to address the country’s current challenges.
Despite Kufuor’s endorsement, the move has sparked debate within political circles. Opponents argue that public endorsements by former leaders could polarize the electorate or create perceptions of bias. However, supporters of the former president view his endorsement as a reflection of his confidence in the party's leadership and vision.
Kufuor’s remarks also addressed broader concerns about leadership and governance, encouraging Ghanaians to focus on policies and proven capabilities when making electoral choices.
With less than a month to the elections, Kufuor’s endorsement adds significant weight to Bawumia’s campaign. As a respected figure in Ghanaian politics, his support underscores the importance of unity within the NPP and the stakes of the upcoming elections.
