WFP Partners with Ghana to Combat Malnutrition  


The World Food Programme (WFP) has intensified its collaboration with Ghana to tackle malnutrition and enhance food security. This initiative focuses on three key areas: improving food safety, promoting nutrition education, and strengthening market linkages.  


Malnutrition remains a critical challenge in Ghana, particularly among children and vulnerable populations. According to the Ghana Health Service, over 19% of children under five experience stunted growth due to inadequate nutrition. In response, the WFP is leveraging its expertise to address these issues by working with local stakeholders, government agencies, and communities.  


A central pillar of this partnership is improving food safety standards. The WFP is supporting efforts to reduce food contamination and enhance storage practices, ensuring nutritious food reaches more households. Additionally, the program is equipping small-scale farmers with the tools and training necessary to produce and distribute healthier food options.  


Nutrition education is another significant component of this initiative. Through community outreach programs, families are being educated about balanced diets, proper food preparation techniques, and the importance of consuming locally available nutrient-rich foods. Schools are also benefiting from these programs, with children learning about healthy eating habits that can shape their future.  


Market linkages are vital for sustaining these efforts. The WFP is helping to connect local farmers to larger markets, creating opportunities for them to sell their produce at fair prices while ensuring urban populations have access to fresh, affordable, and nutritious foods. This approach not only strengthens food systems but also boosts economic development in rural areas.  


The collaboration between the WFP and Ghana reflects a commitment to achieving long-term food security. By addressing malnutrition at its roots, this partnership is paving the way for a healthier and more prosperous population.  


WFP Country Representative Barbara Clemens emphasized the significance of this effort: “Malnutrition undermines human potential and economic growth. Through our partnership with Ghana, we aim to build resilient food systems that benefit everyone, especially the most vulnerable.”
