There is an age-old adage which says; "those whom the gods wish to destroy, are first made mad". This adage seems to be unfolding before our very eyes in this election period. The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) appears to be succumbing to desperation, fear, and "madness" as the December 7 elections draw near.
Their recent tactics are a testament to this. In a bid to discredit the opposition National Democratic Congress's (NDC) John Dramani Mahama, the NPP has resorted to using Bible quotations and misinterpreting them. This was evident when Richard Ahiagba held a press conference, quoting Bible verses in an attempt to sway public opinion.
But what's driving the NPP's desperation? The answer lies in their fear of losing the elections and potentially facing prosecutions and jail sentences when another party comes to power. This fear has led them to employ every trick in the book, including hiding behind the Bible to win the people's trust.
On November 27 2024, the director of communications for the governing New Patriotic Party, Richard Ahiagbah; whiles speaking at a press briefing shamefully likened the former president John Mahama to the “biblical wicked and lazy servant” from the parable in Matthew 25:14-30.
Mr. Ahiagba, whiles quoting the verse states that; “His Excellency John Dramani Mahama is the example of the biblical wicked and lazy servant who did not live up to expectations in his four years as president of this Republic. Ladies and gentlemen, like the master in Matthew 25, Ghanaians must vote on 7 December to cast him out as done in 2016 and 2020”.
According to him, Mahama’s administration, was marked by unmet expectations, economic challenges and governance issues, including persistent power outages known as dumsor. He argued that Ghanaians should not grant Mahama a chance to return to power in the 7 December election.
Ahiagbah described NPP’s flagbearer, Dr Bawumia as a “good and faithful servant” who has diligently served Ghana. He praised Dr Bawumia’s achievements, urging Ghanaians to deliver a decisive victory for the NPP to retire Mahama from politics permanently.
Richard Ahiagba's recent speech has raised eyebrows. While praising Bawumia and discrediting John Mahama, his body language, tone, and facial expressions shows desperation and fear; and a loss in the election, would be catastrophic for him and his party.
Mr. Ahiagba's emotional state while addressing the press was palpable, and the audience could sense his desperation. His speech was laced with a sense of urgency, and it's evident that he believes only a win can save him. The stakes are high, and Ahiagba's actions suggest that he's willing to do whatever it takes including quoting bible verses, misinterpreting them just to mislead people.
Ghanaians are being cautioned to be vigilant when the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) quotes the Bible to discredit their opponents. A recent example is Richard Ahiagba's press conference, where he misinterpreted the Bible to praise Bawumia and promise a bright future if Ghanaians vote for the NPP.
In Matthew 4, we witness a great moment in Jesus's ministry where He faces off against Satan. After 40 days of fasting, Jesus is at His weakest point, and Satan sees an opportunity to strike.
Satan's approach is cunning. He takes Jesus to a high mountain, showing Him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. The temptation is clear: "All this I will give you," Satan says, "if you will bow down and worship me." (Matthew 4:9).
But Jesus is not swayed. With conviction and authority, He responds, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'" (Matthew 4:10).
Jesus' resistance to Satan's temptation is a powerful lesson for us today. In a world where deceit and manipulation are rampant, we must be vigilant and steadfast in our commitment to truth and integrity.
As the December 7 elections approach, it's essential to remember the lesson from Matthew 4. Just as Satan attempted to deceive Jesus with promises of power and glory, politicians like Richard Ahiagba and the NPP may try to manipulate voters with false promises.
Remember, Jesus resisted Satan's temptation by saying, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only". Same must we do to Mr. Ahiagba and his NPP. Don't let them deceive you with their empty promises. Stand firm, and remember, your vote is your voice. Use it wisely, and choose leaders who will truly serve Ghana's best interests.
