Sudan’s assistant coach, Ignatius Osei-Fosu, has expressed his ambition to manage Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars. Confident in his abilities, he believes he has what it takes to lead the team at the highest level.
Ignatius is the assistant coach of Sudan’s national team, working alongside former Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah. Since Appiah’s appointment in September 2023, Ignatius has played a key role in shaping Sudan’s tactical strategies and contributing to their recent success. His expertise was evident when Sudan defeated Ghana 2-0 in Libya during a crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier. The victory dented Ghana’s hopes of progressing while boosting Sudan’s chances. Sudan eventually secured their place at the tournament, finishing second in Group F ahead of Ghana and Niger. This achievement marked Sudan’s return to the AFCON for the first time since 2021.
Speaking to 3Sports, Ignatius emphasized his readiness for the Black Stars role, citing his advanced coaching qualifications and experience. “I think tactically I can do the job,” he stated. “What is a tactical approach? I’m a License A coach, and I can do a tactical approach. But there are other things to the job that have no tactics.” His statement reflects a mix of confidence in his tactical capabilities and an understanding of the broader responsibilities of managing a national team.
Ignatius has previously managed Ghana Premier League sides Liberty Professionals, Techiman Eleven Wonders, and Medeama, where he earned a reputation for his tactical knowledge and ability to work with local players. These experiences and his current role in Sudan have bolstered his coaching profile.
Despite suffering two losses during the AFCON qualifiers, Sudan’s overall performance under the leadership of Appiah and Ignatius was commendable, as they secured qualification to the tournament. Their achievements have continued in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, where Sudan currently leads their group, surpassing strong opponents like Senegal and Togo.
Ignatius Osei-Fosu’s growing international experience, combined with his understanding of Ghanaian football, makes him a potential candidate for the Black Stars managerial position in the future. While he remains focused on helping Sudan excel at the international level, his ambition and track record suggest that managing Ghana could one day be within his reach.
