Nigeria Prepares For Long-Awaited National Census In 2025

Nigeria is poised to conduct its first national census in over 17 years, with the National Population Commission (NPC) announcing plans to hold the exercise in 2025. This pivotal event will provide crucial data on the country's population size, distribution, and demographic characteristics, informing policy decisions and driving sustainable development.

The NPC Chairman, Nasir Kwarra, revealed that preparations are underway to ensure a seamless and accurate process. "The commission is working tirelessly to address previous challenges and ensure the 2025 census is credible, reliable, and acceptable to all stakeholders," Kwarra stated. The census will employ cutting-edge technology, including GPS mapping and digital data collection, to enhance accuracy and efficiency. Additionally, the NPC will collaborate with international partners and local stakeholders to guarantee the exercise meets global standards.

The 2025 census will have significant implications for Nigeria's development, informing policy decisions on resource allocation, infrastructure development, and social services. Accurate population data will also facilitate effective planning in sectors such as education, healthcare, and economic development. Furthermore, the census will provide valuable insights into migration patterns, urbanization, and population growth, enabling policymakers to address emerging challenges.

Nigeria's last census was conducted in 2006, with a reported population of approximately 140 million. The upcoming exercise aims to address previous challenges, including controversies surrounding data accuracy and representation. The NPC has reassured Nigerians of its commitment to conducting an enumeration that reflects the country's diverse population.

To ensure transparency and accountability, the NPC will engage with various stakeholders, including civil society organizations, community leaders, and religious groups. The commission will also establish mechanisms for reporting and addressing complaints, ensuring that the census is free from bias and manipulation.

The NPC has received support from international organizations, including the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the World Bank. These partnerships will provide technical assistance, capacity-building programs, and funding to ensure the census meets international standards.

The NPC is intensifying public awareness campaigns to educate Nigerians on the importance of the census and their role in the process. The commission urges citizens to participate fully, providing accurate information to ensure the census reflects the country's true demographic landscape.

The 2025 census represents a critical opportunity for Nigeria to bridge its data gap and foster informed decision-making. With its potential to shape the country's development trajectory, the exercise has garnered significant attention from stakeholders and the general public alike. As Nigeria prepares for this milestone event, the NPC's commitment to transparency, accuracy, and inclusivity will be crucial in ensuring a successful census.
