President John Dramani Mahama has urged that a peace pact that will be signed by political parties and stakeholders in Ghana would amount to nothing if there is no genuine commitment to its principles. Speaking at a public forum in Accra, Mahama emphasized that while such agreements are symbolic, they need to be backed by sincere action and a collective determination to ensure peace and stability in the country, particularly as the nation heads towards the 2024 general elections.

Mahama, who is also the flagbearer of the NDC, noted that political leaders must go beyond rhetoric to ensure that their actions are guided by the spirit of peace and cooperation. "It is not enough to just sign documents and issue statements. What matters most is the commitment to respect the rule of law, promote free and fair elections, and work toward national reconciliation," Mahama said.

The former head of state has expressed his views amid rising concerns about the extent of political tensions and divisions ahead of the coming elections. Several political actors have voiced fears that the country could witness unrest if the electoral process is not handled properly or if there is no unity among the country's political actors.

Mahama further warned that political leaders have a responsibility to lead by example, calling on all sides to avoid inflammatory rhetoric, hate speech, and actions that could incite violence. He emphasized that the future of Ghana lies in the hands of its leaders, who must demonstrate a shared commitment to peace and national progress.

The former Head of State called for the creation of an environment where everybody feels included, with all parties, including civil society organizations, having a role to play in keeping the country united. He also appealed to the security forces to act impartially and professionally in maintaining order during the election period.

With the political heat on, Mahama made remarks that reminded all that lasting peace and stability need not be just a promise, but require an unyielding commitment to collaboration for all actors in the interest of the nation.
