The Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has given an assurance that the Ghana Police Service would not be the source of disturbance to dent the peace and stability of the country. At a press conference in Accra on Monday, Dr. Dampare said this was a commitment of the force in ensuring law and order in all parts of the country, especially as the country is preparing for general elections later this year.
"We are determined to make sure the Ghana Police Service continues to be a force for good, a force that sustains the rule of law and protects the peace the people of Ghana have long enjoyed," he said. He added that the police are fully ready to deal with any acts that threaten peace and security, but with full attention that law enforcement is executed in a manner that ensures the protection of human rights and respect for democratic values of the country.
The IGP allayed the fears of citizens, reiterating that his administration would not permit any individual or group to cause chaos or disrupt the country's peace, whether from within or outside the police service. He acknowledged the challenges of maintaining law and order in an increasingly complex socio-political environment but stressed that the police force would remain vigilant and neutral in the discharge of its duties.
Dr. Dampare also addressed concerns over police involvement in political activities, stating that the police would continue to exercise professionalism and impartiality. He assured Ghanaians that the police service would never allow itself to be used as a tool for political or personal gains. "The Ghana Police Service will always act fairly, neutrally, and in a manner that respects the rule of law. The actions taken will always be aimed at performing our duty toward the safety of lives and property," he affirmed.
Dr. Dampare, in responding to questions on the preparation against the 2024 general elections, said the police are vigorously engaging other security agencies to ensure peaceful, free, and fair election processes. He urged all Ghanaians to cooperate with the police and be vigilant in maintaining peace.
These statements by the IGP have been seen as strong reiteration of the commitment by the Ghana Police Service to the safety of democracy and ensuring that nothing disrupts the country's harmony.
