Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has urged the media and all other stakeholders to collaborate in maintaining the peace and stability of Ghana. He said every sector has an important role to play in keeping the country calm, especially as the country inches toward the upcoming 2024 general elections.
Dr. Bawumia made the call in a speech delivered at the 2024 National Media Excellence Awards held in Accra. He told the gathering of media professionals, government officials, and representatives of civil society that peace was required for the continuous development of Ghana.
"The media, as the Fourth Estate of the realm, have a great responsibility in moulding public opinion and guiding national conversations," Bawumia said. "Your role in providing balanced, factual, and unbiased information becomes even more critical when there is political uncertainty. We must all work together to avoid any actions or narratives that could incite violence or division."
He further emphasized that Ghana has established a reputation as one of the most peaceful countries in West Africa, attributing this to good democratic institutions, adherence to the rule of law, and the will of its people to coexist peacefully. However, he warned that these gains were not assured and needed the concerted efforts of all in safeguarding them.
The Vice President further urged political parties, civil society organizations, and security agencies to maintain a spirit of cooperation in the lead-up to the elections. He expressed confidence that with concerted effort from all sectors, Ghana will once again demonstrate its commitment to peaceful democratic processes.
The comments by Dr. Bawumia have come at a time when political tension in many countries is mostly observed during election periods, which increases the chances of misinformation, political violence, and even electoral fraud. He reaffirmed the commitment of the government to provide whatever it would take to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful election.
He reiterated, in conclusion, that the peace of Ghana is the country's biggest asset and therefore urged all stakeholders to take steps in the interest of the common future of Ghana. He warned that any actions that should break the country's unity and stability must not be made by anybody.
