Ghanaian Peacekeepers in Lebanon Donate Water to School and Relief Agency
By Douglas T. Coffman - UN

Ghanaian peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) have demonstrated their unwavering commitment to humanitarian service by donating water to a local school and a relief agency in southern Lebanon. This act of kindness highlights the critical role peacekeepers play in fostering goodwill and addressing pressing needs in their areas of operation.

The donation was made by members of the Ghana Battalion (GHANBATT), a unit known for its professionalism and dedication to peacekeeping. The peacekeepers provided clean drinking water to students and staff at a local school, ensuring access to a basic but essential resource for their daily activities. Additionally, they extended their support to a nearby relief agency, helping to address water shortages that have been a growing concern in the region.

In a brief ceremony at the school, the Commander of GHANBATT expressed the battalion’s commitment to serving not only as peacekeepers but also as partners in community development. “Our mission is not only to maintain peace and stability but also to make a positive impact in the lives of the people we serve. By providing this water, we hope to alleviate some of the challenges faced by the community,” he said.

The recipients of the donation expressed profound gratitude for the gesture. The school’s principal commended the peacekeepers for their thoughtfulness, stating, “This generous act will go a long way in ensuring our students have access to clean water, which is essential for their health and well-being.” Similarly, the relief agency highlighted how the water would aid their ongoing efforts to support vulnerable populations in the area.

Lebanon has faced significant challenges in recent years, including economic instability and resource shortages. In such times, the presence of peacekeepers offering both security and humanitarian assistance has been a beacon of hope for many communities.

Ghanaian peacekeepers have earned a reputation for their compassion and dedication in all their deployments worldwide. Their actions in Lebanon continue to reflect Ghana’s longstanding commitment to international peace and solidarity.

As the GHANBATT Commander noted, “Peacekeeping is not just about wearing the blue helmet; it is about building bridges and showing humanity to those in need.” Their efforts serve as a reminder of the powerful impact of small yet meaningful acts of kindness in creating a more peaceful and united world.

This humanitarian act underscores the importance of collaboration between local communities and international peacekeeping forces. Through such initiatives, the Ghanaian peacekeepers in Lebanon continue to leave a positive mark, strengthening bonds of friendship and trust in the region.
