Kwasi Appiah Named Head of Sporting Affairs at Asante Kotoko
Asante Kotoko, one of Ghana's most iconic football clubs, has appointed Kwasi Appiah as its new Head of Sporting Affairs, signaling a major step in the team's reorganization efforts. Appiah, who is also the head coach of the Sudanese national football team, previously served as the Technical Director on the club’s Interim Management Committee (IMC). This move aligns with the appointment of Malik Jabir, a club legend, as the new Technical Director. Under the revised structure, Jabir and head coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum will now report directly to Appiah, with Ogum shifting his focus entirely to his coaching duties. The club announced the changes via Twitter on November 28, 2024, highlighting the new sporting hierarchy with the hashtags #AKSC and #Kotoko4All.
Appiah's appointment comes on the heels of his remarkable success as Sudan's national team coach, leading them to a historic qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This achievement is particularly significant given Sudan’s ongoing civil war, which forced the team to play their home matches outside the country. Appiah, a former Ghanaian international and 1982 AFCON winner, has a storied career both as a player and coach. His reputation for overcoming challenges was further solidified with Sudan's recent victory over Ghana in the AFCON qualifiers, a feat that showcased his strategic acumen. Additionally, Appiah is set to resume his role on the Ghana Football Association's Executive Council, following the lifting of a suspension tied to the Ghana-Sudan international fixture.
On the domestic front, Asante Kotoko recently ended a four-game winless streak with a victory over Aduana Stars, a much-needed morale boost for the team. Looking ahead, the club will face Future Stars in the MTN FA Cup Round of 64 on December 1 at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium. Fans are also eagerly anticipating their upcoming showdown with their rivals Hearts of Oak in the Ghana Premier League, scheduled for December 13 at the Baba Yara Stadium. These matches are critical for the club’s resurgence under its revamped leadership. With Kwasi Appiah at the helm of their sporting affairs, Asante Kotoko aims to cement its legacy as a dominant force in Ghanaian football while charting a new path toward sustained success both domestically and internationalally.
