Former President John Dramani Mahama has explained that the 24-hour economy policy will be a voluntary affair and should not be seen as a forced one. Addressing a public forum in Accra, Mahama explained that while the recent call by the government for businesses and industries to operate day and night is to ensure economic growth, it would not be compulsory.

He emphasized that the policy is being done to give businesses flexible time to extend their work hours for increased productivity, so that they could employ more people to increase the economic pace of the country. "This is something that is voluntary, businesses are at liberty to decide whether they take part in it or otherwise. We are not trying to impose it on any business," Mahama was quoted as saying.

The former president's remarks come amidst growing concerns and debates over the feasibility and implications of the 24-hour economy proposal. Many have expressed reservations about the potential strain on workers, infrastructure, and the general quality of life. Critics argue that the policy could lead to burnout, increased operational costs, and possible negative effects on workers' welfare if not carefully managed.

However, Mahama stood by his initiative and told the conference of a successful practice that has witnessed a jump in productivity and economic vibrancy as the end product in countries with 24-hour economies. He argued that where appropriate policy and supporting infrastructures exist, this can give value to areas like manufacturing, retail, and hospitality industries and boost foreign investments in the economy.

The former head of state further suggested that the government should incentivize businesses with things like tax breaks or shift work support to see extended operating hours. He also called for better planning and consultation with various stakeholders, including labor unions, to ensure that the policy does not adversely affect workers' rights or well-being.

In conclusion, Mahama urged both the government and the private sector to collaborate on creating a conducive environment for the 24-hour economy, ensuring that its implementation benefits all parties involved while safeguarding the interests of the workforce.
