Ruben Amorim is gearing up for a tough challenge in his first Premier League home match as Manchester United manager, with the Portuguese coach bracing for a physical encounter against Sean Dyche’s Everton at Old Trafford. Amorim, who took charge of United earlier this season, has warned that Sunday’s match will be a different test for his squad, expecting a fierce battle characterized by long balls, aerial duels, and relentless pressing.
Everton, struggling in the league, have a reputation for playing a direct, physical style under Dyche, and Amorim is fully aware of the challenge they will pose. "It's going to be a match with a lot of fighting, long balls, second balls," he said. "They have a very experienced coach who knows the league well and understands how to exploit the weaknesses of their opponents. We need to have the ball and control the game."
United's preparation for the match has been hectic, with the team coming off a five-goal thriller in the Europa League against Bodo/Glimt, followed by a trip to Ipswich for their domestic fixture last week. Despite the packed schedule, Amorim is unfazed by the short recovery time between games and is confident in his ability to rotate his squad effectively. “It’s what it is,” Amorim said, acknowledging the challenge of managing fatigue. "We will rotate the players, we will be ready, and we have to win. Against Bodo, we had to use four substitutes to manage fitness, not to control the game. We’ll do the same for Sunday."
With injuries to key players like Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof, Amorim’s options have been somewhat limited, but he is pleased to see some recovery within the squad. One player who is expected to feature prominently is Diogo Dalot. Amorim has praised Dalot’s versatility and work ethic, highlighting the Portuguese defender’s importance to the team. "Diogo is a great player," Amorim said. "He can play on both sides, which is perfect for our system. He’s powerful, always involved in the game, and he gives everything for the team."
Amorim added that while Dalot may appear to be always fresh on the pitch, he still requires careful rotation to maintain his effectiveness. "He's not a machine. We need to rotate him, but I expect the same from him as we saw last year when he was named United’s Player of the Year. He is a fantastic player and will be a big help to the team."
As Amorim prepares for Sunday’s match, his focus will be on ensuring his squad is physically ready for the intense battle with Everton, while also continuing to improve as a team. The manager is eager to see his side build on their recent performances and demonstrate further progress in his early weeks at the helm.
