A heartbreaking fire incident in Axim, located in the Nzema East Municipality of Ghana's Western Region, has claimed the lives of three children aged between five and ten. The tragedy, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, has left the community in mourning and raised questions about fire safety in residential areas.
According to eyewitness accounts reported by GhanaEducation.org and Connect FM, a family of six was asleep when the fire broke out. The parents and their youngest child managed to escape with injuries, but the three other children were tragically unable to make it out.
Lord Listowel, a resident and witness, shared harrowing details of the event. “The parents and the lastborn survived, but the other three children were burnt beyond recognition,” he said. The survivors, including the father, Kwame Asare, sustained severe burns and are currently receiving treatment at the Axim Government Hospital. However, their condition remains critical.
In a tearful recount, Kwame Asare explained how the fire unfolded. After retiring to bed around 9 p.m. with his family, he was awakened by what he initially thought was thunder. He soon realized their home was engulfed in thick smoke and darkness. Acting quickly, he managed to rescue his wife and youngest child but was unable to save the others.
“I tried to rescue everyone, but the flames were too intense. I rushed out to call for help, but by then, it was too late for my other three children,” Asare lamented.
The remains of the children have been deposited at the Axim Government Hospital for further examination, as authorities begin investigations into the cause of the fire. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, with many rallying around the grieving family.
This devastating incident highlights the importance of fire safety measures, particularly in residential areas. Local authorities and community leaders are urged to enhance public awareness and implement safety protocols to prevent such tragedies in the future.
