On November 29, 2024, President Nana Akufo-Addo inaugurated the second phase of the Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange, underscoring the government’s commitment to enhancing Accra’s road infrastructure and alleviating traffic congestion.
The project, located at one of the capital’s busiest intersections, marks a significant step forward in improving mobility, supporting economic activities, and raising the quality of life for residents.
Phase Two builds on the success of the initial phase, which was commissioned in 2020. The first phase included a 550-meter viaduct and ramps connecting Graphic Road to Dr. Busia Highway, a culvert on Graphic Road, and a storm drain extending to the Ring Road West carriageway.
This new phase expands these improvements, easing travel to critical destinations such as the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Kaneshie, and other parts of Accra. The completed interchange is expected to reduce traffic congestion significantly, saving time for commuters and facilitating the smooth movement of goods and services.
President Akufo-Addo highlighted the broader impact of the project during the inauguration. “The completion of Phase Two is more than just an infrastructure milestone. It is a testament to our vision for Ghana—a vision where efficient infrastructure drives economic growth and enhances the well-being of our citizens,” he stated.
The President emphasized the economic potential unlocked by the project, including new business opportunities and reduced transportation costs. By improving the flow of goods and people, the interchange is poised to attract investment and stimulate growth in surrounding communities.
“This project doesn’t just address today’s traffic challenges. It lays the foundation for sustainable economic vibrancy in our capital city,” he added.
Reflecting on his pledge to complete the second phase during the 2020 commissioning of Phase One, President Akufo-Addo expressed satisfaction at fulfilling that promise. He assured Ghanaians of the government’s continued focus on transformative infrastructure projects to support development nationwide.
“The Obetsebi Lamptey Interchange is a shining example of what we can achieve when we prioritize infrastructure. It is a catalyst for the progress we seek in every sector,” he said.
The project aligns with the government’s broader efforts to address urbanization challenges and create a modern, efficient transportation network to support Ghana’s development ambitions.
