The Ghana Police Service has intercepted a Yutong bus transporting 1,800 rounds of ammunition at the Customs barrier in Binguri, located in the Binduri District of the Upper East Region. The operation was carried out by the Bawku Divisional Police Command following a tip-off.
The vehicle, with registration number GW 6471-22, was en route from Kumasi to Bawku when it was stopped. The driver, whose identity has been withheld, was arrested and is currently in police custody while investigations continue. The bus has also been impounded at the Bawku Divisional Police Command, and the ammunition is being held as evidence.
According to a source within the police, the driver has provided a caution statement and is expected to be processed for court soon. While official comments from the Bawku Divisional Police Commander, ACP Adamu Seidu, were not available at the time of reporting, the investigation aims to uncover the origins of the ammunition and its intended destination.
The Mamprugu Youth Association (MAYA) issued a statement commending the police for their vigilance and swift action. Awudu Bagura, President of MAYA, emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation to determine those responsible for transporting the ammunition and their motives.
"We applaud the efforts of the security agencies in intercepting this consignment. We urge the police and the Ministry of National Security to deepen intelligence gathering to prevent similar incidents in the future," Mr. Bagura noted.
The group also called on the government to strengthen monitoring of transport routes across the country, highlighting the critical role of security in ensuring public safety, particularly in regions with heightened tensions.
This interception comes at a time when Ghana is gearing up for its December general elections, intensifying the need for robust security measures to maintain peace and order. The police have reassured the public of their commitment to upholding safety and will provide updates as investigations progress.
The incident has raised concerns about arms smuggling and the potential risks to national security. Stakeholders are urging for greater vigilance in monitoring movement across regional borders and transportation networks to safeguard the country during this sensitive period.
The public has been encouraged to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely information that could aid in averting such incidents.
