John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2024 elections, has urged Ghanaians to vote out the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) due to the ongoing economic struggles facing the country. Addressing a large crowd of supporters in Ayawaso East, Greater Accra, Mahama highlighted the rising cost of living, particularly the sharp increase in food prices, as evidence of the NPP government’s failure to manage the economy effectively.

Mahama criticized the current administration for exacerbating the hardships of ordinary Ghanaians, pointing out that the price of staple food items like kenkey had drastically increased under the NPP’s tenure. He used this as an example of how the government’s economic policies have made life more difficult for many families. In the past, he recalled, when the NDC was in power, kenkey cost around GH¢1 per ball, but today it costs GH¢5 for one ball, with the price rising even further when adding fish. This, he argued, is a clear sign of economic mismanagement.

Reflecting on the previous criticisms of his government by the NPP, Mahama noted that while his administration faced its challenges, it had at least provided a level of peace and stability in the country. He reminded the audience that during the NPP’s tenure, promises to improve the nation’s economic conditions had not materialized, and the cost of living had continued to rise.

Mahama called on Ghanaians to take action in the upcoming election, asserting that their votes are a powerful tool for change. He reassured his supporters that, if elected, the NDC would prioritize policies aimed at reducing the cost of living, improving economic conditions, and delivering prosperity for all.

The NDC leader emphasized the need for a new direction, urging the people of Ayawaso East and all Ghanaians to reject the failed policies of the current government and support a leadership that would work towards a more stable and prosperous future. Mahama’s message was clear: it’s time for change, and the opportunity to do so lies at the ballot box.
