The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has disclosed that Otto Addo, the head coach of the Black Stars, and his technical team are owed several months of unpaid salaries. In a statement made by GFA Communications Director, Henry Asante-Twum, during an interview on Joy FM’s Game Plan, he explained that the Ministry of Youth and Sports is responsible for handling the payments, not the GFA.

Asante-Twum confirmed that while the exact duration of the arrears is uncertain, it is clear that the salaries of Addo and his backroom staff have not been paid for some time. He emphasized that the responsibility for these payments falls squarely under the Ministry’s purview, particularly when it comes to issues of contracts, termination, or severance pay.

The situation comes amid growing speculation about Otto Addo’s future as head coach following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Addo, who is reportedly on a $50,000 salary, has faced mounting pressure regarding his leadership after the team’s disappointing performance in the qualifiers.

Asante-Twum also highlighted the importance of consulting the Ministry in any decision related to Addo’s tenure, particularly if the decision to part ways is made. He noted that the GFA is not in a position to handle severance matters alone, as the Ministry would be responsible for managing the financial aspects of such a decision.

This revelation has sparked discussions about the challenges faced by the Black Stars’ management and the broader implications for Ghanaian football. The delay in salary payments adds another layer of uncertainty to a period already marked by underperformance and frustration within the national team.

With the national team’s future in the balance, Ghanaians are awaiting further updates from both the GFA and the Ministry of Youth and Sports regarding Otto Addo’s contract status and the overall direction of the Black Stars. The situation highlights the need for greater coordination between the GFA and the Ministry to ensure that the financial and administrative aspects of the team’s operations are handled efficiently.
