Ghana Confirms First Mpox Case of 2024: Health Officials Monitor 25 Contacts
Ghana has confirmed its first case of Mpox in 2024, health officials have announced. The case was detected in the Greater Accra Region, prompting immediate measures to contain the outbreak. The Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service (GHS) are actively monitoring 25 individuals who were identified as contacts of the infected person.
According to the GHS, the confirmed case involves a 29-year-old male who reported to a local health facility with symptoms including fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes. Laboratory tests conducted at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research confirmed the diagnosis. Health authorities have assured the public that the situation is under control and that protocols are in place to prevent further spread.
**Contact Tracing and Surveillance Efforts**
In a press briefing, Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director-General of the GHS, revealed that the 25 contacts under observation include family members, healthcare workers, and others who had close interactions with the patient. These individuals are being closely monitored for any signs of Mpox symptoms during the 21-day incubation period.
“We are working diligently to ensure that all contacts are tracked and assessed. Our health teams have been deployed to the affected community to educate residents on preventive measures and to provide support where needed,” Dr. Kuma-Aboagye stated.
**Nationwide Alert Issued**
As a precautionary measure, the Ministry of Health has issued a nationwide alert to all healthcare facilities. Healthcare providers have been instructed to enhance surveillance, report suspected cases promptly, and adhere to infection prevention protocols.
Mpox, a viral disease caused by the monkeypox virus, primarily spreads through close contact with infected individuals or contaminated materials. The symptoms are generally mild, but severe cases can occur, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems.
**Public Advised to Remain Calm**
Health officials have urged the public to remain calm while adhering to recommended preventive measures. These include regular handwashing, avoiding close contact with individuals showing symptoms, and seeking medical attention if symptoms arise.
The Ministry has also assured Ghanaians that the country is prepared to manage any potential outbreak. Vaccines and treatment options are available, and Ghana’s health infrastructure has been strengthened following previous outbreaks.
The government has called for cooperation from the public to ensure early detection and containment of the virus. “We are not new to managing Mpox cases. With vigilance and public support, we will overcome this challenge,” Dr. Kuma-Aboagye concluded.
Health authorities are expected to provide updates on the situation as contact tracing and monitoring continue.
