Nick Cannon Opens Up About Narcissistic Personality Disorder Diagnosis and Healing Journey

Nick Cannon has revealed his recent diagnosis of narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), sharing that he is actively seeking help to understand and manage the condition. The Masked Singer host first discussed the diagnosis on his podcast Counsel Culture earlier this month, where he explained being “clinically diagnosed” with the mental health condition.

Speaking to People during a Thanksgiving event for the Los Angeles Mission homeless charity, Cannon emphasized his commitment to self-improvement. “I still don’t understand it all the way, but I kind of always wanted to get tested for it,” he admitted.

He elaborated on his journey toward embracing the diagnosis: “There are so many labels out there, but I embrace mental health and therapy in such a strong way. To say, ‘I’m healing, I need help, show me,’ and to serve as an example for others while going through my own process of healing, feels empowering.”

Narcissistic personality disorder is characterized by an inflated sense of self-importance, excessive need for attention, and challenges in relationships and work life, according to the Mayo Clinic. While Cannon acknowledged identifying with many markers of narcissism, such as overconfidence and arrogance, he clarified that he does not resonate with traits like lack of empathy or rage.

On his podcast, Cannon explained: “It’s a spectrum. It starts with confidence, then overconfidence, and arrogance, and eventually steps into narcissism. I’ve recognized these markers in myself and have been attempting to do the work through therapy.”

The father of 12 added that he’s no stranger to therapy, having worked with several therapists over the years. “I’ve taken the power away from the term narcissism because I’ve researched it and now understand it,” he shared.

Reflecting on his journey, Cannon said he sees the diagnosis as an opportunity for growth and hopes his openness can inspire others to address their own mental health challenges.

On a personal note, Cannon shared that Thanksgiving remains a busy but fulfilling time as he makes an effort to see all his children. “It’s very complicated, but I find time for everyone,” he said.

Cannon’s candid discussion sheds light on the complexities of living with NPD while demonstrating his commitment to self-awareness and healing.
