Capture Psoriasis Under NHIS: Cost of Treatment Unbearable for Patients — PAG Urges Gov’t

The Psoriasis Advocacy Group (PAG) has called on the government to include psoriasis treatment under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), emphasizing that the cost of managing the condition remains prohibitively expensive for many patients in Ghana. The group argues that the lack of financial support through the NHIS leaves thousands of patients vulnerable to physical, emotional, and financial hardships.

Psoriasis, a chronic autoimmune condition that primarily affects the skin, is known for causing scaly, red patches, severe itching, and inflammation. It can also lead to complications such as psoriatic arthritis and cardiovascular issues if left untreated. Treatment for the condition often includes topical creams, phototherapy, and systemic medications, which can be costly for patients without health insurance coverage.

The High Cost of Psoriasis Treatment

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra, the Executive Director of PAG, Mrs. Akosua Oforiwaa, revealed that the average cost of treatment for a psoriasis patient ranges between GH₵1,000 and GH₵3,000 monthly, depending on the severity of the condition. This expense is unaffordable for most Ghanaians, particularly those in rural areas.

“Psoriasis patients are battling more than just a skin condition; they are battling financial distress. The cost of treatment has forced many to abandon their care, resulting in complications and reduced quality of life,” Mrs. Oforiwaa stated.

She added that patients who rely on imported medications face even higher costs due to fluctuating foreign exchange rates and import duties, making treatment almost impossible for those with limited financial resources.

Psychological and Social Impact

Beyond the financial burden, the group highlighted the psychological and social challenges psoriasis patients endure. Many individuals face stigma and discrimination due to the visible nature of the disease, which further compounds their struggles.

“Psoriasis is not contagious, yet patients are often treated as outcasts. They suffer silently because of the stigma, and this must change. Including psoriasis treatment under NHIS will not only address the financial barrier but also validate their struggles as a public health concern,” Mrs. Oforiwaa emphasized.

Appeal to Government

The group is urging the Ministry of Health and the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to prioritize psoriasis treatment under NHIS. PAG believes that this move will significantly improve the lives of patients while reducing the overall public health burden associated with untreated cases.

The group also appealed to stakeholders, including pharmaceutical companies and non-governmental organizations, to support initiatives aimed at making treatment more affordable and accessible.

Way Forward

Dr. Emmanuel Kyei, a dermatologist at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, lent his voice to the advocacy, describing the inclusion of psoriasis treatment under NHIS as a necessary step to promote equity in healthcare.

“Psoriasis is a lifelong condition, and patients should not have to choose between managing their health and meeting basic needs like food and shelter. NHIS must evolve to meet the needs of all citizens, especially those battling chronic conditions,” Dr. Kyei remarked.

As World Psoriasis Day approaches, PAG and its partners plan to intensify their campaign, raising awareness about the condition and rallying support for their call to action. The group remains optimistic that the government will heed their plea, ensuring that no Ghanaian is left behind in the fight against psoriasis.

Inclusion under NHIS, they argue, will not only provide relief to patients but also affirm Ghana’s commitment to universal health coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals.
