Dawuni's Rocky Path to the Grammys

Rocky Dawuni, Ghana’s Afro-Roots/Reggae artist, first earned global recognition with his Grammy nomination in 2015 for Branches of the Same Tree, marking a significant achievement for Ghana’s music industry. Since then, he has received three additional Grammy nominations: in 2021 for Voice of Bunbon Vol. 1, in 2023 for Neva Bow Down featuring Blvk H3ro, and most recently in 2024 for Rise. His nominations have brought attention to his unique blend of Afro-Roots music, but the coveted Grammy trophy has so far eluded him.

The Grammy Award for Best Global Music Album honors international performers representing non-European, indigenous traditions, a category in which Dawuni has been a consistent contender. While the accolades from Ghana have been loud, his journey to winning a Grammy has been challenging. Each time he’s nominated, expectations soar, but the "gold-plated gramophone" has often gone to artists from other countries.

Despite this, Dawuni remains optimistic about his chances. Reflecting on the upcoming 2025 Grammy Awards, he expressed confidence, stating, “I’m 100% sure I will win my first Grammy next year.” He believes his decade of hard work and consistency will finally pay off. Dawuni’s unique approach to music, blending African influences with global sounds, has garnered a strong following, even as many artists with similar global potential struggle to break through. He attributes his success to staying true to his roots and forging his own path rather than following fleeting trends.

Dawuni’s Afro-Roots sound, which combines reggae, highlife, afrobeat, and pop, has been key to his recognition. His music often carries empowering and peaceful messages, resonating with audiences worldwide. He believes this authenticity is what has fueled his nominations, noting that his music's global impact is what sets him apart from other artists.

However, despite his international acclaim, Dawuni has expressed disappointment at the lack of recognition and support at home. He feels that Ghana has not always fully acknowledged his achievements, but he remains committed to representing the country on the global stage. “I believe in my mission to serve the people of Ghana,” he said. His advice for aspiring artists emphasizes the importance of mindset, humility, and determination, stressing that true success comes from loving the craft and making sacrifices for growth. As Dawuni prepares for the 2025 Grammys, he remains focused on his mission, confident that his time to win is near.
