The Ghana Police Service has launched a detailed investigation into a reported incident involving the convoy of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) running mate, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, in the Eastern Region. The incident, which occurred during her campaign tour, has raised significant concerns about the safety of political activities as the December 7 elections draw closer.

According to preliminary reports, the convoy encountered resistance from a group of unidentified individuals. Witnesses allege that stones were thrown at the vehicles, causing damage to several cars. While no injuries have been reported, the situation heightened tensions in the area, prompting swift action from the police. The motive behind the confrontation remains unclear, but it has fueled fears of political violence in the lead-up to the elections.

The Eastern Regional Police Command, in a statement, reassured the public that they are committed to maintaining law and order during the election period. "We have commenced a full-scale investigation into the matter to determine the facts and bring any culprits to justice," the statement read. The police have also appealed to eyewitnesses to come forward with relevant information to aid their inquiry.

The NDC has strongly condemned the incident, describing it as an attack on democracy and free political expression. Party officials have called for calm while urging political opponents to promote peaceful engagements. "We must rise above violence and commit to the principles of democracy," an NDC spokesperson remarked.

This incident adds to growing concerns about election-related security challenges in Ghana. Civil society organizations and political analysts have emphasized the importance of tolerance and restraint among political actors to avoid exacerbating tensions.

The police have announced plans to bolster security in identified hotspots across the country to ensure the safety of candidates, supporters, and voters. With Ghana's reputation as a stable democracy in Africa at stake, all stakeholders are being called upon to prioritize peace and the rule of law during the critical electoral period.
