New York Attorney General Letitia James attended the 2024 New York City Veteran's Day Parade as legal battles involving President-elect Donald Trump continue to unfold. Trump’s attorney, Sauer, has requested that James drop her fraud case against him, but she is unlikely to oblige.
Meanwhile, significant developments have emerged in Trump’s other legal challenges. On Monday, Special Counsel Jack Smith filed motions to dismiss several high-profile cases against Trump. These included four felony counts related to his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election and his role in the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. Trump had pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Federal Judge Tanya Chutkan in Washington, D.C., granted Smith’s motion to dismiss the election-related charges just hours after the request was made. Smith cited Department of Justice policy that prohibits prosecuting sitting presidents, a point referenced in Chutkan’s decision.
Additionally, Smith moved to drop the appeal of another case involving Trump’s handling of classified documents in Florida. Trump had faced 40 federal charges, including obstruction, over sensitive materials retrieved from his Mar-a-Lago residence after his presidency. He pleaded not guilty to all charges. The dismissal of these cases marks a significant shift in Trump’s legal landscape.
Sauer, whom Trump has nominated as solicitor general, pointed to these developments as evidence of Democratic prosecutors abandoning “discredited lawsuits” against Trump. The solicitor general, one of the highest legal positions in the nation, represents the government before the Supreme Court.
However, James remains resolute in her pursuit of the fraud case. Following Trump’s election victory, she reiterated her commitment to holding him accountable, stating at a press conference, “My office has been preparing for a potential second Trump administration, and I am ready to do everything in my power to ensure our state and nation do not go backwards.”
As legal proceedings evolve, the dismissal of federal cases may bolster Trump’s position, but James’ determination underscores that he still faces significant legal challenges ahead.
